Today I was researching Stanislavski, through reading his book ‘An Actor Prepares’. I have done a large amount of different training with Stanislavski but have never before spent time to fully analyze his texts. Here is what my key points are which I will take away from today’s reading. Stan (Stanislavski) suggests that to create a truthful performance you need to be internally connected to your surroundings, not externally showing. There is a power in letting your imagination believe what is happening – which will result in a believable physicalisation. Using ‘if’ and putting yourself in different scenarios can help to develop this. Understanding the Given Circumstances – the facts – can support the use of ‘if ‘. You need to be able to understand everything about your character. To every action which is taken – there must be thought and meaning which is behind it, otherwise it seems fake to the audience. There is also an importance in exercising the imagination and to be an active thinker, rather than a passive one. Remaining closer to logic will help build facts and in some cases, create a more believable unbelievable performance.
